What you want to do in the public space and why?
We would like to be in a position to have a semi- permanent location and equipment to run esports / gaming activities with a solid focus on engaging and revitalising the youth in Darwin. There will also be a social engagement with youth with social problems such as autism to give them a place to engage with familiar technology. Fun workshops such as online cyber safety, gaming behaviours and social activities will be promoted here along with educational programs for teachers and students. Giving youth and young adults a common place to meet for this type of activity will make a positive impact in the local youth sector. Having this facility and equipment will help us to run the programs at a high level.
How you will make this project happen?
The project would consist of a structure depending on what activity is happening. The programs will be run with a head co-coordinator and volunteers or employees as required. We would setup in the space provided with new equipment and have various programs running throughout a period (school holidays) as well as other times where it can be used as a youth centre for engagement and a place for high schools to utilise.
When will the project start and finish? How long will it take?
Initially this would run only in periods such as school holidays however it may reach the point of becoming a central hub and may get to the point of needing to be permanently staffed and run by a business or NFP.
What permits or whose permission will you need to implement the project? What do you already have and what will you need to obtain?
Permission and consent from parents may be required. With certain activities we may require school permission if engagement is through a school or youth group in collaboration. We would require permission from the space provider, an agreement on running costs (if any). Qualifications including police check clearance, first aid certificate, working with Children (Ochre Card).
How will you deliver the project, including how many people will be involved and any partnerships you have developed?
The project, programs and workshops would be delivered by working with several youth groups that specialise in troubled youth, special needs, esports interest (through schools).
How will you know your project is successful?
We will collect data that will help us find out what is successful and what isn't. What we do know is that there is a strong connection with youth, technology and esports. It will be a matter of working with various partners to determine a successful outcome with the various programs that can be implemented.
